Of the 25 cars sold at a certain dealership yesterday, some had automatic transmission and some had anti-lock brakes. How many of the cars had a automatic transmission but not antilock brakes?
(1) all of the cars that had anti-lock brakes also had an automatic transmission (2) 2 of the cars had neither automatic transmission nor anti-lock brakes
Lets look at (1). All cars that had anti-lock breaks also had automatic transmissions, but did all cars with automatic transmissions have anti-lock breaks ? There is no way to determine the latter. A Fails.
B Also fails. All (2) tells us is that there are 23 that have either automatic, anti-lock, or both. There is no way to deduce how many automatic cars there are without anti-lock breaks. We can eliminate Choices A, B, and D. C also fails.
C simply tells us that of the 23 cars left all the anti-lock break cars were automatic, it tells us nothing about the automatic cars having anti-lock breaks. The statements together are inconclusive. The correct answer is E.
